Richard Avedon was an American photographer. His portraits and fashion photography are considered some of the best of the twentieth century. In many ways, he is credited with elevating celebrity portraits and fashion photography to the forefront of the larger field of photographic art. In Evidence: 1944-1994, Avedon provides some of his most celebrated photography alongside work from his personal archive. There are portraits of numerous celebrities and social figures from the era, but unlike most Avedon collections, Evidence contains candid photography and collage-form layouts pairing his magazine covers with notable collections. Alongside the photographs are essays on Avedon’s life and career by Jane Livingston and Adam Gopnik. It is a remarkable volume, one that covers a sprawling, impressive career. This first edition, first printing is inscribed by Avedon on the photographic spread after the half-title page. It is in near-fine condition. In the original pictorial boards, near-fine with only fading to edges. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, near-fine with only minor rubbing. A near-fine inscribed first edition by Richard Avedon.
