Description“This book is about a tale of Nigeria’s sorrow as it commenced a bloody journey into an avoidable civil war. It is presented lucidly as it captures the major events of the time providing post civil war Nigerians with the highlights of the crises leading to the war. Sorrowful as the situation was, Dan as usual intermixed the sorrowful with the humorous.”– DR HAROUN AL-RASHID ADAMUan Agbese entered the hallowed halls of journalism at 23. It has been a life-long affair between him and journalism. At the time the editor of the New Nigerian,Mallam Adamu Ciroma,Employed him has the first staff writer at the newspaper, Agbese was a green horn, without a formal training in the profession. In September 1970, the University of Lagos admitted him into its department of mass communications to remedy that professional deficiency, earning a bachelor of arts degree, second class upper division from the university in 1973. He won the Sir Isaac Pitman prize for the best graduating student in the print media in his class. He later went on to the famous Columbia University, New York, for his master of science graduate degree in journalism. He also won the John Taylor award as the best graduating student in the international division, class of ’77. Agbese has held various positions in journalism. He has edited two national newspapers, namely, the Nigeria Standard and the New Nigerian. He was editor- in-chief of the trail-blazing newsmagazine in Africa, Newswatch. He and his three professional colleagues, Yakubu Mohammed, the late Dele Giwa and Ray Ekpu, co-founded the magazine in 1984. He left his large professional footprintson all the publications he edited. He cherishes his new role as a mentor to young and aspiring journalists and writers in Nigeria. He has written 12 books, eight of them on journalism. Five of them are recommended text books in journalism schools in the country. This is his thirteenth book. It, certainly, would not be his last.
