Richard Dawkins is an English evolutionary biologist and popular science author who is considered one of the preeminent figures in evolutionary science. He has published several major works. His 1976 book titled The Selfish Gene is one of the most influential popular science books of the last century. His 2006 work titled The God Delusion was also impactful. Over his career, he has been credited with formalizing a gene-focused theory of evolution, popularizing the idea that behavioral traits are also evolutionary traits, and challenging religious dogma. For all these reasons, Dawkins is often seen as an important yet controversial public figure, one who leads with scientific theory while challenging social and religious ideologies. In Brief Candle in the Dark: My Life in Science, Dawkins recounts his intellectual career following the years of his first major publications to the more recent decades wherein he spent much of his time in public debate and prestigious academic positions. Much of the work deals with the period in which he published The God Delusion–a work that transformed his public image and made him a target for religious parties offended by the work’s criticisms of religious ideologies writ large. Brief Candle in the Dark is subsequently an important memoir. It tells the story of Dawkins’ career from his perspective, revealing much about his logic and lived experiences.
