Over a decade before his first presidential run, Barack Obama practiced law and worked as a community organizer for several notable foundations in the Chicago area. He was far from a national figure at the time but found great success working within Chicago’s non-profit organizations and legal spheres. At that time, he also managed to get his first book deal, publishing Dreams from my Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. It was a critically praised memoir, noted for its lucid prose and ability to recount the diverse cultural perspectives Obama experienced growing up. It did not become a major bestseller, however, until his presidential campaign in 2007. As his national prominence grew, so too did the interest in his personal narrative and background, making Dreams from my Father an important component of his political career. It was the book that helped introduce Obama to the voting populace. It remains his scarcest and most celebrated memoir. This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. In the original quarter cloth, very good with some rubbing and bumping to edges and soiling to front board. Very slightly bowed. Text block very good, only former owner’s inscription and signature to front free endpaper. In the original dust jacket, about-fine with only bumping and creasing to spine ends. A very good first edition of president Obama’s first book.
